Squarespace Releases Facebook Page Support

The folks at Squarespace continue to refine Squarespace 6, the newest version of the content management system and blogging platform. Last week they released a handful of new features, including social media profile support for Facebook Pages.

When Squarespace 6 first launched this summer, Facebook support included gallery and tab integration and social link integration with your personal profile, but you couldn't override your social links on your website to display your brand's Facebook Page URL.

With the change announced on the Squarespace Service Blog on October 17, Squarespace released support for Facebook Pages when integrating social links on your website.

Displaying Your Facebook Page on Squarespace Social Links

Squarespace's Facebook Page integration interface is intuitive and lightweight.

Squarespace's Facebook Page integration interface is intuitive and lightweight.

Integrating your brand's Facebook Page with Squarespace is easy. Access your Squarespace website's administrative settings, and navigate to the Connected Accounts menu. Add a Facebook connection, and use to drop-down to select the appropriate Facebook Page from the Push Target field.

Squarespace templates that support social links will now display your Facebook Page link instead of your personal profile link.

(Note: You may have to uninstall, then re-install a Facebook connection to support brands.)

This menu can also be leveraged to create a default posting format for your Facebook statuses when you publish new content on your Squarespace blog. You can use dynamic fields, such as your post titles, URLs, and authors.

How important is Facebook to your Squarespace website? Is it critical to the success of your brand, or is there another social network that is even more important than Facebook?

Squarespace SEO Philosophies

Squarespace SEO Hangout on AirLast week four Squarespace enthusiasts — designer/developer Alan Houser, author of Squarespace for Dummies Kris Black, non-profit podcaster Ed Lucas and yours truly — opined about search engine optimization (SEO) strategies for Squarespace in areas such as indexation, social media SEO, and SEO keyword selection using the new Google+ Hangouts on Air. Today, you can catch all the important details or watch the re-broadcast.

If you have the time, you can watch the entire episode on our YouTube channel (don't forget to subscribe). Or, catch the highlights below. Also, contact me if you'd like to be a part of the next Hanging Out and Talking Squarespace on Thursday, July 26th. Our topic will be "quick and dirty design tips."

Highlights from Squarespace and SEO Hangout

The Hangout on Thursday, June 28th was full of perspective due to a dynamic group composition consisting of a non-profit expert and podcaster, a two developer designers, and marketer. The differing viewpoints provided for a rich conversation around several important topics:

  • Indexing on Squarespace - The group discussed the SEO implications of using Squarespace's built-in search engine indexation options, as well as the ever-popular SEO issues that can result from having an active yourusername.squarespace.com subdomain in addition to your custom domain.
  • Social Media and SEO on Squarespace - Next up the quad covered using extra HTML snippets for social media sharing buttons on Squarespace and what Squarespace will likely do around social sharing as a part of the upcoming Squarespace 6. They also talked about using Schema.org microformating to control the image and text snippet that is shared on social networks such as Facebook and Google+ in status updates.
  • Keyword Selection and SEO - Perhaps the most interested portion of the Hangout was the discussion around SEO keyword selection on Squarespace websites. Spoiler alert: a good publication also makes for a solid user experience and supports a major chunk of any solid long-term SEO strategy.

Take Time to Recharge

There's a relationship between working and the capacity for more work that works like a battery. Hard work requires time off or you'll become much less efficient in what you're doing. Stephen Covey called it production and production capability. We often focus so much on producing, and yet we rarely take time to actively relax.

Take a few minutes to recharge and share a sunrise with me that was recorded via a Google+ Hangout this morning from Carolina Beach, North Carolina. (I'm personally doing some recharging of my own on vacation with Emily and her family.)

Hanging Out and Talking Squarespace

Squarespace Google+ HangoutA few weeks ago I received an email from Carlus Gupton asking for some advice about search engine optimization (SEO) on Squarespace. Since I don't have much extra time for consulting these days, I told Carlus that I wanted to figure out how to help him out while not letting any of my other responsibilities slip. Turns out, Google had the answer in their new Google+ Hangouts. Hang out with me while I cover Carlus's SEO questions, and let's chat about Squarespace, online marketing, and SEO.

A Google+ Hangout About Squarespace

On Thursday, June 28 at 7pm CDT (8pm EDT/6pm PDT) we'll be hosting our first ever Google+ Hangout, and you're invited to participate. We're calling it Hanging Out and Talking Squarespace, and it might just turn into an ongoing series about online marketing with Squarespace.

The topic of this first show will be Squarespace and SEO. We'll be exploring the best way to organize your website, how to perform keyword research for your website, and the do's and don't's of SEO on Squarespace.

Google+ Hangout Features

Up to nine people can be a part of a Google+ Hangout at any one time. That's 3/4 dozen people asking questions, sharing knowledge and showing off their Squarespace websites. Claim your spot in the Hangout early by dropping me a line and telling me that you're interested.

What do you need to hang out with us? A computer with a microphone, webcam, and Internet connectivity is required. It also helps to have interest in how to market your Squarespace website online, but not necessarily any direct knowledge.

Google+ Hangout features

We'll also be inviting people via Twitter, Facebook and Google+. Plus, we'll be streaming live on YouTube, thanks to the new Hangouts on Air functionality Google released in May. Hanging Out and Talking Squarespace will be published on our currently sparse YouTube channel after the live event has concluded for those who can't attend in person.

Don't miss your chance to be a part of the first Google+ Hangout about Squarespace with our Hanging Out and Talking Squarespace series starting on June 28. Drop me a line now to secure your spot during the live event. You can also submit your ideas for future show topics too!
